A Wonderful Gift

"Muloma Women’s Development Association (MUWODA) was formed by a group of displaced women in Kenema in 1996. The organization emerged in order to respond to the critical plight of vulnerable women, children and girls in the displaced camps during the heat of the war.

Muloma Women’s Development Association (MUWODA) is a women-led and women’s right development agency that strives towards the achievement of durable peace and sustainable development through collaborative approaches with the active participation of the marginalized populace especially women, children, youths, physically disadvantaged. Founded in 1996 initially as a community based organization (CBO) by some concerned women to respond to the plight of women and children during the civil war in Kenema, the association has evolved over the years into a formidable National Non-governmental Organization (NNGO) that garners inclusive development to the most hard to reach and neglected communities. The organization is currently registered with the government of Sierra Leone (Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, MoPED) and with the 7 local councils as NNGO. The Councils include Kenema, Kailahun, Kono in the east, with Bo, Bonthe, Moyamba and Pujehun in the south. Key beneficiaries continue to be women and girls.

It is also affiliated with the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (SLANGO),West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) and MenEngage Alliance."

Enhancing Civil Society Organizations’ Capacity for Inclusive Governance and Development in Sierra Leone

The project aims to increase the capacity of community-based organizations and, in particular, women’s rights groups, to advocate for gender parity in governance and leadership in order to increase women’s participation in policymaking and development. Activities include enhancing capacity and partnerships among civil society organizations, state actors and community for a as well as increasing public support for women’s political participation and leadership in the run-up to general elections scheduled for 2023. Further, the project addresses Covid-19 as both challenge and opportunity by advancing women’s participation and leadership in community, district and regional responses to the pandemic.
